Is your deodorant putting your health at risk?
Deodorant is one of the most popular hygienic products used daily by practically every person in this country, and for good reason! But believe it or not, the popular brands widely available in supermarkets and drug stores are putting your health at risk.
The aluminum salts, most commonly aluminum chloride, are the main active ingredients acting as a deodorizer and antiperspirant. The aluminum is absorbed into the skin and acts on the sweat gland to prevent sweat and the smell associated with moisture in this area. The problem is it is absorbed into all of the surrounding tissue and affects DNA expression of the cells.
Breast tissue constitutes part of the under arm anatomy, and thus many tumors are found to have elevated levels of aluminum. It is possible your deodorant is putting you at risk for breast and other cancers because the aluminum is absorbed into the blood stream as well. Parabens are also associated with cancer and is another ingredient in many of these popular deodorants.
The good news is awareness about these toxins has increased and innovative brands are committed to providing chemical free deodorants made of natural ingredients such as coconut oil, arrowroot powder, and essential oils. You can find many in natural food and health stores as well as online. The one caveat I found with using natural deodorants is that you may have to reapply at least once throughout the day, but I don’t mind because at least I’m not putting my health at risk.
My favorite natural deodorant I’ve used thus far is Humble Hopes made by my cousin. I’m so proud of her for creating this wonderful recipe herself! It has a great scent, is wonderfully moisturizing, and is best to store in a cooler environment like the refrigerator to keep the consistency firm since the main ingredient is coconut oil. You can purchase yours at www.humblehopes.heartbeat.com. Let me know how you enjoy it!
